Portland Police Identify 18-Year-Old Terrell J. Granberg Killed in Shooting

Details of the Shooting and Emergency Response

Portland police responded to reports of gunfire in the 5800 block of Northeast Alberta Street at approximately 3:33 a.m. Sunday. Officers arrived within 10 minutes of the initial 911 calls to find a “chaotic scene” with hundreds of people fleeing the area. While the shooter or shooters had already departed, officers located two injured individuals during a hasty sweep of the property. One victim required a tourniquet and trauma first aid before both were transported to the hospital by ambulance.

Four additional victims were transported to nearby hospitals via private vehicles. One of these individuals was critically wounded and taken to a level-1 trauma center; despite lifesaving efforts, that victim died. All five other victims are expected to survive, and their injuries are believed to be non-life threatening. The injured include:

• An 18-year-old man from Portland
• An 18-year-old woman from Gresham
• A 20-year-old man from Vancouver, Washington
• A 15-year-old boy from Troutdale

Crime Scene Investigation and Evidence

Police Chief Bob Day described the scene as one of the larger and more complex investigations the bureau has seen in a long time, noting that the scene stretched over three blocks and involved multiple houses, cars, and yards. To document the area, the PPB Traffic Division utilized a drone-based overhead mapping system.

Investigators have recovered more than 75 shell casings and over 145 additional pieces of evidence. Sgt. Kevin Allen of the Portland Police Bureau stated that preliminary evidence indicates dozens of rounds were fired across multiple neighborhood blocks. Detectives have conducted dozens of interviews as they continue to follow leads.

Prior Police Contact and Current Investigation

According to officials, police had been called to the same house earlier that evening following a noise complaint regarding a large gathering. Officers reported that the people at the house were cooperative and many agreed to leave. When police departed the property at 12:38 a.m., approximately a dozen people remained, and the noise disturbance had ceased. The shooting occurred less than two hours later.

No arrests have been made, and police have not released descriptions of suspects or vehicles. Chief Day stated on Monday that the bureau is absolutely confident there are witnesses who have not yet come forward. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) assisted at the scene and has approved a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to an arrest.

Friends remembered Terrell J. Granberg as a football star and a loving father who had recently graduated from high school. A memorial for Granberg has been established in the area of the shooting, and a GoFundMe has been created in his honor.
