Reflecting on why she initially agreed to keep filming The Real Housewives of New Jersey while under federal investigation alongside her then-husband, Joe Giudice, she emphasized her maternal priorities. I’m always a mom first. I always want to protect my children over anything, she told Hollywoodreporter. Initially, she believed they should fight the charges in court, noting, I guess because I’m on TV, let’s just go through the process. She added that she never believed she would actually be incarcerated: I really never in a million years thought I would go to jail. If you said to me, ‘I’ll give you $40 million right now, are you going to go to jail?’ I’d be like, ‘No, absolutely not.’ I thought I just had to go through the process and then everything would be fine.

Indictment, Plea Deal, and Prison Terms

The legal troubles for the Giudice family began with a federal indictment in July 2013 for bankruptcy, mail, wire, and bank fraud, a timeline captured closely by season six of The Real Housewives of New Jersey in 2014. The couple subsequently entered a plea deal in March 2014.

In federal court in Newark, New Jersey, U.S. Ultimately, Teresa served 11 months, and Joe faced deportation to Italy following his sentence, leaving the country in 2019. The couple later divorced in 2020.

Discussing her culpability in the interview with Hollywoodreporter, Teresa maintained that her involvement was minimal and stemmed simply from signing paperwork. I put my John Hancock on that dotted line, and I went to jail because of that. That’s the reason why. My story will never change, she stated. She asserted that everyone in New Jersey knew she had nothing to do with her husband’s business finances, describing her role strictly as a stay-at-home housewife who cooked, cleaned, and watched the children. Being a celebrity made me go to jail. They made an example, she added.

Teresa Giudice has since remarried Luis “Louie” Ruelas and is preparing for her return to The Real Housewives of New Jersey for its upcoming 15th season, which is currently in production following a two-year hiatus.
