13-Year-Old Boy Dies After Box Jellyfish Sting at Thailand’s Ban Fai Tha Beach

The tragedy struck during a moment of leisure following a community-focused event. According to Thai Examiner, Boonplod had just participated in a charity football tournament intended to benefit the local community before entering the water with approximately 20 friends.

The Attack at Ban Fai Tha Beach

Despite staying close to the shoreline, the situation turned critical in seconds. Witnesses reported that Boonplod suddenly screamed that something had burned him. In the ensuing effort to rescue the teenager, three other people were stung: two of his friends and one local resident. One witness claimed to have seen three to four jellyfish surrounding the boy in the water.

The injuries to the rescuers were not life-threatening. One boy suffered stings on both arms, another was stung on the calf, and the local man was stung on one arm. Boonplod, however, collapsed and lost consciousness while still in the water. Although paramedics transported him to a hospital, he could not be saved. A subsequent examination of his body revealed sting marks on his arms, neck, and chest, as well as two bite marks on the back of his left arm, according to Thai Examiner.

Chironex fleckeri and the Danger of the Sea Wasp

The creature responsible has been identified as the box jellyfish, specifically Chironex fleckeri, often referred to as the sea wasp. This species is frequently cited as the most venomous animal in the world. While its bell typically measures less than 20 centimeters, its thin tentacles can extend several meters and are packed with stinging cells.

The venom is fast-acting and severe. According to Thai Examiner, the toxins can cause respiratory distress, muscle cramps, intense pain, and heart failure, potentially killing a person within a few minutes. In the event of a sting, the recommended immediate action is to pour wine vinegar on the wound and seek medical help as quickly as possible.

Sichon District’s Unseasonable Jellyfish Surge

Box jellyfish have appeared in the Sichon area several months before their usual season.

Through the website Thai World, the DMCR has urged beachgoers to exercise extraordinary caution. The agency advises that if poisonous jellyfish are spotted in the water, people should not enter the sea at all and must follow the instructions of lifeguards. Officials further warn that people should not touch jellyfish, even those that appear to be dead.
