The feature launches under the label Bezahlen mit iDEAL | Wero
as part of a multi-year migration plan that will completely replace iDEAL in the German marketplace by the end of 2027.
Shoppers interacting with the German Amazon webshop will notice a familiar authorization process handled directly through their banking apps, but the underlying payment routing is undergoing a major structural shift. According to IT BOLTWISE reporting, the checkout option appears as Bezahlen mit iDEAL | Wero
to manage the transition smoothly without pulling users away from trusted habits. Rather than forcing sudden account updates or manual re-registrations, Amazon has designed a stepped rollout that keeps customer accounts intact while migrating the payment network in the background.
The European Payments Initiative and Bank Availability
At the technical and organizational core of this rollout is the European Payments Initiative (EPI), a collaborative framework uniting more than 30 banks and financial service providers. Wero was established to build a unified European payment ecosystem capable of standing as an alternative to dominant US-orientated platforms across online retail and digital transactions.
Originally launched in 2024 to handle peer-to-peer instant transfers between individuals, Wero expanded its capabilities to support online merchant checkouts in the autumn of 2025. The platform is already active in Germany, France, and Belgium, boasting over 43 million registered users and more than 100 million transactions. However, practical adoption at the Amazon checkout depends entirely on banking partnerships. Participation is currently limited to accounts held at specific supporting institutions, including ABN AMRO, ING, N26, Rabobank, and Revolut.
A Phased Migration Timeline Through 2027
Because only select banking customers have immediate access to Wero-enabled accounts, Amazon and other retailers are maintaining a parallel system during the transition period. Routing rules in the checkout manage the split depending on the customer’s bank assignment, allowing older iDEAL logic to persist alongside the new European standard until the complete phase-out concludes at the end of 2027.
This multi-year timeline places Amazon’s German integration into a broader regional strategy. In the Netherlands, where iDEAL is heavily embedded in daily commerce, Wero is similarly slated to replace the legacy system entirely by late 2027. Payment teams and merchants are utilizing this transition window to secure predictable checkout modernization, supported by early adopters such as Decathlon and Lidl, alongside test integrations across platforms like the comparison portal CHECK24.
