NASA is accelerating its plan to install a lunar base near the Moon’s South Pole by investing nearly $600 million in four new robotic missions, according to eluniverso.com. The agency awarded these contracts to Astrobotic, Firefly Aerospace, and Intuitive Machines under its Commercial Lunar Payload Services program, which is considered a pillar of the Moon Base project.
NASA Accelerates Moon Base Strategy With Commercial Contracts
Astrobotic received two contracts totaling $297.9 million, while Firefly Aerospace secured one for $144.2 million and Intuitive Machines received one worth $148.3 million. Lori Glaze, associate administrator for the Exploration Systems Development Mission Directorate at NASA, stated that the awards demonstrate the agency’s commitment to accelerating the effort to build a long-term presence on the lunar surface. The initiative features an architecture combining science, technology, and future human operations, supported by a network of commercial landers that companies must deliver by 2028.
South Pole Location and Science Objectives
The future base will be strategically located near the lunar South Pole due to the detection of water ice deposits, which are vital for long-term mission success. Utilizing this ice will allow for the production of drinking water, breathable oxygen, and rocket fuel, reducing reliance on supplies sent directly from Earth.
The first phase of the plan extends through 2029 and includes more than 20 robotic landings. The four newly contracted missions will transport three identical scientific instruments to study the lunar environment:
- Cameras to analyze how dust is displaced during landings
- Laser retroreflector arrays to aid future mission navigation
- A spectrometer to measure radiation levels and protect astronauts
Commercial Lander Missions and Testing
Commercial partners are currently advancing vehicle preparations and testing. Intuitive Machines is preparing the IM-3 mission—the third lunar landing of its Nova-C vehicle—which will carry five NASA payloads, six commercial payloads, and one civil payload to the surface, alongside the Altus-1 data relay satellite. The mission will target Reiner Gamma, marking the first time a mission explores the surface of a lunar swirl in a magnetic anomaly. The vehicle completed thermal vacuum testing at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston, with structure, propulsion elements, and avionics fully assembled ahead of cryogenic propellant loading.

Firefly Aerospace is developing the Blue Ghost 2 mission, which combines a Blue Ghost lander with the Elytra orbital spacecraft into a 6.7-meter-tall system. Meanwhile, Voyager Technologies is subjecting its Griffin-1 lander to environmental testing at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory.
Broader Timeline and Mars Preparation
The first phase of the Moon Base program runs through 2028 with an investment of approximately $10 billion to develop initial infrastructure. Beyond lunar exploration, MSN reports that the technology and experience gained from the project will serve as a stepping stone and testing ground for future crewed expeditions to Mars.
In subsequent phases planned for the 2030s, NASA intends to install initial pressurized habitats and power systems to allow astronauts to live and work on the Moon for extended periods.
