Grokipedia Stalls as xAI Encyclopedia Goes Months Without Updates

When xAI rolled out Grokipedia in late 2025, the platform debuted in v0.1 with an initial batch of 885,000 articles, promising a less biased and tech-forward alternative to traditional online references. By November 2025, the site advanced to version 0.2 and expanded past 6,000,000 total articles, according to its live tracking page. Yet beneath those headline article counts, signs of stagnation have turned into a standstill.

Lawfare Audit Reveals Months of Zero Edits on Grokipedia Pages

An analysis conducted by Lawfare inspected both popular and unpopular entries across the encyclopedia and uncovered a total lack of movement. Investigators examined 34,519 pages that had accumulated a combined total of 225,496 recommended edits from users. Out of that substantial sample size, researchers found zero accepted or rejected corrections dated within the preceding three months.

The live statistics page on the encyclopedia mirrors these findings. While users can still submit suggestions for new topics and edits to existing entries, a section titled Recent changes to… displays a blunt message:

The creation of the platform stemmed from sharp criticisms leveled by Musk, who argued that conventional references suffer from a left-wing political bias and lack true objectivity. To counter this, xAI designed the system to draw on existing sources—including Wikipedia itself, with technical topics sometimes pulling in entire paragraphs verbatim—while relying on built-in fact-checking mechanisms akin to those used by Grok on the X platform.

The Wikimedia Foundation pushed back against accusations of systematic political slant. Pointing to twenty-five years of investigations, representatives maintained that no reliable evidence supports claims of ideological distortion. Wikimedia emphasized its reliance on a decentralized community of contributors rather than corporate curation.

Wikimedia officials have also highlighted their structure as radically transparent, allowing anyone to trace the exact origin of every piece of knowledge and review the full edit history.

Diverging Assessments from Wikipedia Co-Founders

Reactions from the platform’s original architects reveal a split over the viability of an automated competitor. Jimmy Wales defended the established model, arguing that neutrality remains non-negotiable and dismissing the prospect of ideological capture. Musk fired back at Wales with a terse Famous last words.

On the other hand, fellow co-founder Larry Sanger offered a more receptive assessment, describing the alternative encyclopedia as very OK and suggesting it might already rival traditional pages in certain respects. Musk echoed this sentiment, asserting that the project outshines established references even in its early iterations.

With xAI declining to respond immediately to recent inquiries regarding the standstill, and with Musk having posted nothing about the platform since February, the future of the AI reference tool remains unclear as users await official word on whether development will resume.
