Google Maps Expands Ask Maps with Food Ordering and Agentic Features

Originally introduced in March, Ask Maps is receiving its biggest expansion since the navigation suite’s overhaul. According to Engadget, Google Maps senior product director Amanda Leicht-Moore demonstrated the new capabilities by asking the chatbot for recommendations and initiating an order directly through the app.

Direct Food Ordering and Agentic Commerce

Users can now instruct Ask Maps to handle takeout orders conversationally. For instance, a user can ask the assistant to order spicy pad kee mao with seafood for me to pick up on my way home, according to Google’s official blog.

The system finds open restaurants along the user’s route that match their craving while factoring in saved places and specific dietary needs. Once a restaurant is selected, Ask Maps automatically places the requested dish into the user’s cart for final review and purchase completion.

Food ordering is rolling out with partners including Square, Toast, and DoorDash, with Uber Eats support scheduled to follow. Google is also co-developing a Universal Commerce Protocol for food ordering with its partners. While food ordering, hotel and event discovery, and conversational contributions launch first in the United States, Google plans to expand them to more countries over time.

Personal Intelligence and Gmail Integration

Google is introducing Personal Intelligence, which securely connects Ask Maps to Gmail—and eventually other apps like Calendar—allowing responses to factor in existing plans such as upcoming flights and dinner reservations.

* Gmail Connection: Off by default, giving users full control over their data. * Smart Itineraries: Answers prompts like Give me ideas on how to spend a few hours near my hotel before my flight tomorrow by pulling reservation details. * Conversation Memory: If history settings are enabled, Ask Maps remembers past conversations so users can pick up where they left off.

Live Transit Updates and Conversational Contributions

Alongside agentic tasks, the update introduces a live transit widget that delivers up-to-the-minute delay information for buses, trains, subways, and ferries. This widget, alongside personalized responses and chat history, is rolling out globally wherever Ask Maps is available.

Furthermore, users can now suggest map edits conversationally or via the Contribute tab. For example, users can upload a photo of a storefront sign, and Google Maps will detect updated business hours from the image and ask for confirmation before submitting the change for review. Ask Maps is also expanding its regional availability to Australia, Brazil, Canada, Indonesia, Japan, and Mexico, alongside English-language support in over 150 countries and territories.
