Splitting the Dynamic Duo: Hal and John Go Solo in Episode 2
The pilot episode of the DC series established an electric, contentious chemistry between Kyle Chandler’s Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre’s John Stewart. These characters can barely tolerate one another at the best of times, creating an engaging dynamic. However, the follow-up installment separates the pair for the majority of its runtime. As it turns out, these two figures prove just as fascinating apart as they are together.
Episode 2 features compelling Hal and John interactions as bookends, but the bulk of the narrative focuses on them as solo players. While John carries out a glorified fetch quest for his grouchy mentor, Hal digs deeper into the local mysteries of Rushville, Nebraska. Both men ultimately discover far more than they bargained for during their separate excursions.
Clashes with Sheriff Kerry and Small-Town Alien Conspiracies
Chandler delivers a pitch-perfect performance as an onerous take on the iconic DC hero, needing a sharp foil to balance his prickly demeanor. Sheriff Kerry, played by Kelly Macdonald, slots into that role nicely. Her acerbic banter with Hal matches the entertainment value of the core Hal/John rivalry. The episode allows viewers to sympathize with both sides of that dynamic. Audiences feel Kerry’s exhaustion as she handles Hal’s antics, including a traffic stop involving a car full of lukewarm corpses. Simultaneously, Hal proves entirely justified in his suspicion that strange things are afoot in the sleepy town, as his gut instincts do not lie.
Beyond the local friction, the installment adds welcome wrinkles to the overarching murder mystery. Viewers discover that Kerry possessed far more awareness of the alien situation from the beginning than she initially let on. It becomes increasingly clear that something is rotten beneath the small-town facade. The narrative also introduces the other half of the equation with the debut of Antaan, played by Paul Ben-Victor, alongside his men. While convenience in alien characters taking human form limits the perceived scope, mentions of rogue Manhunters and ruined civilizations elevate the conflict past a simple small-town shootout.
Behind the Humor and the Cosmic Finale on Oa
Amidst a gritty murder mystery where costumed characters drop F-bombs, Episode 2 leans heavily into comedy. The installment is aggressively funny, driven largely by Hal’s impromptu detective work and John wandering the halls of Hal’s empty mansion to meet “Earl” for the first time. Pierre excels at playing the calm, collected straight man while surreal events unfold around him.
The episode closes on a powerful note when Hal and John reunite at a motel. John silently wrestles with whether he can trust Hal before sharing everything he learned from Antaan. Yet, the story immediately pivots into broader cosmic territory. Hal finally suits up for the first time in 2016 and flies to Oa to visit the incarcerated Sinestro, portrayed by Ulrich Thomsen. Featuring brief lines between the two characters, this cliffhanger sets up a compelling dynamic for the Green Lantern franchise.

“With the DCU suddenly on shaky ground following the disastrous reception to Supergirl, it’s reassuring to see Lanterns get off to such a strong start. It proves that there’s indeed room for superhero stories in this cinematic universe that aren’t all cut from the James Gunn cloth. While the central murder mystery in Episode 1 is more serviceable than actively intriguing, the characters and their uneasy dynamics more than justify giving the show a watch. Chandler’s Hal Jordan and Pierre’s John Stewart make for a mighty but very dysfunctional Dynamic Duo, and the prospect of spending seven more hours with them is exciting indeed.”
