A 10-year longitudinal study published in the journal Nutrients by Flinders University researchers reveals that consuming more than five cups of coffee daily is linked to lower bone mineral density in older postmenopausal women, whereas tea drinking correlates with higher hip bone density, according to data from 9,704 participants tracked over a decade.

The relationship between daily coffee intake and skeletal integrity depends heavily on volume. Moderate coffee consumption, defined as roughly two to three cups per day, showed no adverse association with bone health in the study cohort. However, drinking more than five cups of coffee daily was linked to lower bone mineral density at vulnerable skeletal sites.
