Building in a newly developed commercial zone requires a careful touch, especially when nature remains the primary neighbor. INS Studio tackled this challenge by grounding their three-story gathering space in the local geology of Maros, Indonesia.
Grounding Contemporary Design in Local Geology
Crafting a Climate-Responsive Exterior Skin
Local builders harvested andesite stone from nearby mountains, setting it directly into interior walls, flooring, and the main coffee bar in a striking square pattern. Paired with this heavy masonry, terracotta brick perforated screens wrap the exterior skin.
Zoning Programs: From Social Ground Floors to Productive Terraces
Every level of the building serves a distinct purpose while maintaining an open flow. The ground floor acts as the social heartbeat, functioning as a bustling coffee shop with an open spatial layout.
Visitors can easily look up and connect with the second floor, which trades caffeine-fueled chatter for a quieter atmosphere dedicated to productivity. This middle tier houses collaborative working spaces alongside private meeting rooms for indoor tasks. Stepping outside, an outdoor terrace finished in locally produced terracotta bricks extends the work area into the fresh air. To soften the industrial feel, local gardeners cultivated and installed a striking moss wall, injecting calming greenery into the workspace to boost everyday well-being.
Passive Climate Strategies and Panoramic Rooftop Views
Managing the fierce Indonesian sun requires smart passive design. A defining facade element on the front elevation features a perforated breeze block wall that filters intense morning rays while pulling natural breezes straight from the surrounding hills into the second-floor terrace.
This cooling airflow travels upward to crown the building: an open-air rooftop garden oriented deliberately toward Bukit Cenrana. Long celebrated as one of Maros’ most prominent natural landmarks, the hill transforms into an immersive architectural backdrop. Beyond offering sweeping panoramic views, this rooftop doubles as a flexible venue for community gatherings, small exhibitions, and casual relaxation, proving that contemporary commercial design can honor its local geography without losing its modern edge.
