“A true gent”: Heartbreaking tributes paid to young Irishman who died in camping accident in Canada

Tributes have poured in for Charlie Beirne, a 35-year-old Irishman who died following a camping accident in Vancouver, Canada, on Friday, April 17.

Beirne, originally from Boyle, Co Roscommon, had been living in Chilliwack, British Columbia, in recent years. He came from a well-known family in Knockvicar, North Roscommon, where his family operated the village post office and shop for many years.

He is survived by his fiancée, Taylor Nicole Walker, and their two-year-old son, Shea, as well as his parents, Cathal and Anne Beirne, and sisters Kelly and Eimhear. Beirne was due to celebrate his 36th birthday in two weeks.

St. Michael’s GAA club, where Beirne was a talented football player for many years, stated that his passing has left the club in shock. The club noted that his character “lit up every room.”

Former classmates and neighbors remembered him as a “true gent” and a “fine young man.” He was described by a close friend as a “happy, cheeky little guy full of fun” who will be greatly missed.

A former classmate recalled how Beirne’s wit and mischief brightened school days, while a neighbor expressed heartbreak over the sudden loss of a “wonderful son and brother.”

Following the tragedy, friends in Canada have organized a fundraiser to support Taylor Nicole Walker. More than $20,000 (€17,000) has been raised to help cover funeral arrangements.
