‘Absolutely stunning’: Christmas card campaign for service personnel collects record numbers

A record-breaking 12,400 Christmas cards and holiday greetings are being sent to Canadian Armed Forces members stationed worldwide, thanks to the efforts of a community in Aurora, Ontario, and the dedication of Dianne and Brian Harrison.

Twenty Years of Support

For the past 20 years, the Harrisons have mobilized their community to write messages of support for Canadian service personnel. This year’s total surpasses their goal of 10,000 and represents a new milestone in their initiative.

“It’s an absolute record – we had counted 12,000 and then, in the last few days, we got another 400 in,” Dianne Harrison said.

Community Collaboration

The cards will be delivered to CFB Trenton this week. Numerous organizations contributed to the effort, including the Optimist Club of Aurora, The Men’s Shed at the Aurora Seniors’ Centre, CHATS (Community & Home Assistance to Seniors), retirement homes, and local churches.

Dianne Harrison expressed her gratitude, stating, “My heart is beating so fast and so warm right now because I just feel the love that is being sent with every card that these soldiers are getting.” She believes both the senders and receivers are blessed by the initiative.

Increased Awareness and Support

Harrison noted a growing awareness of the challenges faced by soldiers, both overseas and at home, as a motivating factor for increased participation this year. People are concerned about the future and are grateful for the country and military they have.

Contributions from young writers were particularly impactful, with Harrison praising their heartfelt and creative messages. She also expressed some concern about children’s access to truthful information in the age of artificial intelligence.

Expanding Reach

The Aurora Public Library helped organize cards from children and teens, while drop-off boxes were placed at various locations throughout the community, including the Aurora branch of the Royal Canadian Legion and Chocolate & Co. The placement of boxes in new locations revealed that many residents were unaware of the initiative, leading to increased involvement.

The Harrisons have confirmed they will continue to lead the effort for a twenty-first year, encouraging others to save Christmas cards for 2026 and consider sending messages to Canadian soldiers.
