Active holidays ideas for 2026

As 2025 comes to an end, many of us are setting ourselves New Year’s resolutions. By far the most common resolution, of course, is to be more active. While some are happy with a gym membership only, the others want to go a step further – try active adventures while on holidays too. If that’s you, here are some fun ideas!

Long-distance walking holidays

Walking holidays are becoming increasingly popular around the world and especially in Europe, known for its ancient Camino de Santiago network of pilgrimage routes. This way of travel is super accessible to those of all fitness levels, requiring no specialist knowledge of gear. All you do is walk from point A to point B each day, visiting beautiful landscapes and historic monuments along the way, until you reach your final destination.

Not just that, this holiday is highly customisable, as you can do it in almost any country as well as create the right itinerary for you (difficulty level, daily walking distance, the length of your trip, etc.). Dedicated agencies like Orbis Ways are there to help you organise the logistics, taking care of route planning, accommodation, luggage transfers and more. An active holiday has, therefore, never been easier!

Cycling adventures

Similarly, cycling holidays are another excellent option, particularly if you prefer to cover more distance and a faster pace. There are routes available for all fitness levels and preferences, from leisure rides through the vineyards of Bordeaux in France to more demanding itineraries around the Pyrenees mountain range.

If you’re not used to cycling long distances, you may also hire an e-bike, which will make the inclines and hilly areas a lot more manageable. Therefore, it can be the perfect adventure for the whole family, including children and more senior relatives.

Water-based activities

If you prefer to do something more similar to a traditional holiday, while also incorporating active elements, then this is one for you. Water-based activities are usually easily available in most sunny destinations, including resorts and island holidays.

This is your chance to try your hand at snorkelling, diving, paddleboarding, kayaking, surfing and various other water sports. Not only does it keep you active throughout your time there, but it can be super fun with a good dose of adrenaline. And, you never know – you may find yourself a new hobby for life.

City breaks with a twist

Active holidays are not limited to nature landscapes. City breaks with an active twist can be just as great and suitable for shorter trips. All you have to do is choose a destination and then plan your activities all around being active.

Perhaps you’ll decide to walk and hike everywhere, avoiding public transport until absolutely necessary. For instance, if you go to Edinburgh in Scotland, walking everywhere will gain you quite a few steps, including nearby hikes to the viewpoints and steep staircases within the city.

Similarly, you may join a cycling tour in Amsterdam, Netherlands, or a guided jogging tour around London, England. There may also be other activities you want to try, such as indoor bouldering. As you can see, the options are truly endless!

Getting active in 2026

The best thing about active holidays is that they’re not just good for our health. Choosing them offers a rewarding way to see the world, full of new experiences and meaningful memories…
