Adams & UK Bombs: Shocking Ignorance Revealed

A retired British Army officer and a former IRA member have testified in a civil action trial in London alleging that Gerry Adams was a member of the Provisional Irish Republican Army (IRA) and involved in decisions related to bombings in England. The former Sinn Féin leader is being sued by three victims of IRA bomb attacks who claim he was directly responsible for their injuries.

Gerry Adams IRA Involvement Allegations

Former Colonel Richard Kemp, who served seven tours in Northern Ireland and worked for the UK Cabinet Office’s Joint Intelligence Committee, stated in a witness statement that intelligence information explicitly named Adams as a member of the IRA’s Army Council. Kemp said it was “inconceivable” Adams was not involved in decisions regarding bombings in London and Manchester in 1996, as any such attacks would have required approval from the Army Council.

Kemp told the court he considered Sinn Féin and the IRA to be “pretty much the same” and “working hand in glove.”

Shane Paul O’Doherty, a former IRA explosives officer who served 14 years in prison for a letter bomb campaign, also testified that Adams was a member of the organization. O’Doherty, who has published critical social media posts about Adams, including referring to him as “King Rat,” stated he was motivated by a desire for “truth” and support for the victims.

O’Doherty alleged Adams had “a command and control role in the IRA,” but confirmed he had never met or spoken to Adams prior to the trial.

Victims Seek Accountability

Kenny Donaldson, chair of the South East Fermanagh Foundation (SEFF), which represents victims of paramilitary violence, said the civil action is an important step towards accountability. He emphasized the case is about acknowledgement and that Adams’ age does not exempt him from responsibility.

Adams denies any involvement with the Provisional IRA and is opposing the claim. The trial continues in the High Court in London.
