The loss of security personnel in the country’s southern border provinces drew a high-level military presence on July 27, as officials gathered in Surin province for the funeral rites of a fallen ranger. Ranger Volunteer Wimon Tabthong, who served with the 45th Ranger Forces Regiment, lost his life following an insurgent attack on the Bu Ke Sa Mi checkpoint located in Tan Yong Mat subdistrict, Rae Ngae district, Narathiwat province.
Royal Cremation Held at Wat Champa Thararam in Surin
The royal cremation ceremony took place at Wat Champa Thararam in Sangkha district, Surin province. High-ranking military commanders, government officials, local leaders, and community members attended the service to pay their respects to the fallen soldier.
Prior to the religious rites, Defense Minister Lt. Gen. Adul Bunthamcharoen met privately with the soldier’s parents and relatives at the venue. During the visit, the defense minister listened to the family’s concerns and offered personal condolences before presiding over the cremation ceremony.

Addressing the gathering, the defense minister emphasized the severe toll exacted on military ranks during counter-insurgency operations in the southern border region. There is nothing more painful than having to lose subordinates, Lt. Gen. Adul stated, noting that these personnel sacrifice their lives to protect the public and maintain national security.
The government and the Ministry of Defense committed to providing comprehensive assistance to the bereaved family across all dimensions, including welfare support, financial compensation, and long-term quality-of-life measures. Officials highlighted that the Golden Card Hero rights project has been established to ensure that parents, spouses, and children of personnel killed in the line of duty retain continuous medical treatment access.
