/ Prime Minister Muhammad Shiaa Al-Sudani announced on Saturday that his government is entering into negotiations with major international companies to manage the large Al-Faw port project in Basra Governorate, the southernmost part of Iraq.

This came during his inspection tour, in which he followed the progress of work implementation in the Al-Faw Grand Port project, and during a sea tour, he was briefed on the port’s five berth projects, after the completion of berth number one and two sections of the second berth.

The Sudanese media office quoted him as saying that the Al-Faw port project receives special attention from the government, and it is serious about completing it according to the required specifications. We are facing a real and vital project ready to receive ships after completing the requirements for its implementation, which is proceeding within what is planned.

He stated that the government has developed solutions to all obstacles and technical problems. In order to implement the project with the best specifications, and that there are negotiations with major international companies to manage the project, stressing that the Al-Faw Port project will have a pivotal role in transporting goods between Asia and Europe, especially since it is linked to the Development Road Project, which represents the major Iraq project.

Al-Sudani had directed, at the end of 2022, to accelerate work on all executive paragraphs of the large Al-Faw port, considering it a project “the size of Iraq and the aspirations of its people.”

The Grand Al-Faw Port is an Iraqi port on the Al-Faw Peninsula, south of Basra Governorate, the southernmost part of the country. Its cost is about 4.6 billion euros, and the estimated capacity of the port is 99 million tons annually, making it one of the largest ports overlooking the Gulf and the tenth largest in the world, and the foundation stone was laid for this. Project on April 5, 2010.

The issue of the Grand Al-Faw Port and the delay in completing it sparked controversy, and representatives accused successive governments of concluding deals with neighboring countries that neglected to establish the port in favor of those countries’ ports.

The project also witnessed some delay following the “suicide” of the technical director of the South Korean company Daewoo, which is implementing the large Al-Faw port project, for mysterious reasons.
