The fight for the big crystal globe is in full swing
In the 2022-2023 season, 85 starts are planned: 43 for men and 42 for women. However, skiing is a very weather-dependent sport. A snowstorm, or lack of snow, strong winds or rain – these weather disasters can postpone or completely cancel the start. This season, due to warm weather, all starts at the first three stages were canceled for women, men could not start at the second and third stages.
In the men’s and women’s category, the winner is determined in the parallel slalom (only one stage), downhill, super-G, giant slalom and slalom. 100 points are awarded for the victory in each start, 80 points for the second place, 60 points for the third and so on. The 30 best athletes receive credit points. At the end of the season, the absolute winners among men and women receive a Big Crystal Globe as a reward. Swiss Marco Odermatt and American Mikaela Shiffrin defend the titles of absolute champions this season. Also, an award in the form of a small crystal globe is given to the champion in a separate discipline.
Champion is back in the lead
After nine stages of the World Cup for men, last year’s champion Marco Odermatt took the lead. At first glance, the position of the leader seems unshakable, but still it is worth taking a closer look at its competitors.
- Marco Odermatt
- Alexander Amodt Kilde
- Lukas Braaten
- Henrik Christoffersen
- Matthias Maier
Marco Odermatt
There are three Norwegians in the top four, but the Swiss skier is at the top of the standings. The Olympic champion won the Big Crystal Globe last year and looks set to repeat his achievement this season. Marco won four starts out of twelve, on two more occasions he finished second. Such results allow the Swiss to take the current first place in the overall standings, with 796 points in the asset. Odermatt intends to defend the title and so far there is no reason to doubt it.
Alexander Amodt Kilde
The two-time Olympic medalist from Norway started playing in the professional arena at the age of 25 – quite late to start his professional career. However, this did not stop Alexander from winning two Olympic medals, winning several World Cup stages and becoming the owner of the Big Crystal Globe in the 2019/20 season, when the season was stopped due to the Covid pandemic. This season, Kilde has won four starts and retains all chances for the main trophy.
Lukas Braaten
The young Norwegian (born in 2000) does not yet have high-profile titles, but this season for Lucas is more successful than ever. Braaten has won three starts and is third overall. The biggest triumph of Lucas this season can be considered the victory in the giant slalom in the Italian Alta Badia. It is unlikely that a young skier will be able to fight for the Big Crystal Globe this season, but he will gain experience of victories at the World Cup stages, which will come in handy in the next seasons.
Henrik Christoffersen
The multiple World Cup winner has yet to win a single start this season. Henrik was born in 1994, during which time he won the world championship, became the owner of the Small Crystal Globe in giant slalom in 2019. Kristoffersen has not yet won this season. Nevertheless. in the overall standings, he takes fourth place, and his backlog from Lukas Braaten is measured by ten points.
Matthias Mayer
One of the most titled active skiers has never held a Big Crystal Globe in his hands. There have been only ten three-time Olympic champions in the history of skiing and Mayer is one of the ten. The Austrian has not won a single start this year, having settled for third place in the super-G in Lake Louise, Canada, and taking the bronze medal in the downhill race in Italy. Mattias is unlikely to be able to claim the main trophy, but he will compete for the top spot in the overall standings.
