Amarinder Warring Resigns as Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee Chief

Amarinder Singh Raja Warring formally resigned as the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee chief, handing over his resignation to Rahul Gandhi amidst mounting internal revolt and preparations for the 2027 assembly elections. The central leadership removed Warring following weeks of factional friction, with a new state president expected to be named within 24 to 48 hours.

Sachin Pilot’s Punjab Report Triggers Leadership Overhaul

The path to Warring’s exit was cleared by a detailed report compiled by newly appointed AICC Punjab in-charge Sachin Pilot. Pilot, who replaced Bhupesh Baghel on September 5, 2026, held separate meetings with state leaders in Delhi and toured Punjab to gather feedback from every faction before submitting his assessment to the high command, NDTV reported. I don’t have concrete proof of this, but perhaps the General Secretary felt that Raja should be removed… Otherwise, there is no specific issue… I have conveyed what I had to say to Rahul Gandhi. There is no one left after Rahul Gandhi to whom I could explain what should or shouldn’t happen… Baghel had previously spent weeks attempting to address rival factions and had favored retaining Warring, but his move to Assam cleared the way for Pilot’s intervention.

Internal Power Tussle and Contender Lineup for 2027 Elections

Warring’s four-and-a-half-year tenure concluded after persistent public clashes with rival leaders, most notably former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi. A July reshuffle that retained Warring as PPCC president while placing Channi in charge of the election campaign committee failed to quell the unrest, leaving disgruntled leaders demanding Warring’s removal. Following his meeting with Rahul Gandhi, Warring remarked on his tenure: He (Rahul Gandhi) gave me a lot of love. He sought information about the current political situation in Punjab, on what is happening with the government and what we should be doing there. He added, I discussed with him our challenges and how we have to fight those challenges and where our strengths lie.

Political Reactions and Opposition Skepticism in Chandigarh

Commenting on the leadership shuffle, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann asserted that opposition infighting would only worsen regardless of who takes charge. A new president will be appointed, but even the new president will not be able to unite the Congress leaders. As the party moves closer to announcing a successor, Warring has already updated his social media profile to reflect his status as the former state chief, leaving the high command to finalize a leadership structure capable of mounting a challenge against the ruling Aam Aadmi Party.
