A U.S. national has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity in the murder of his father at a hotel in County Laois, Ireland, over a year ago.
Henry McGowan Pleads Not Guilty by Reason of Insanity
Henry McGowan (31), of Clinton Street, Brooklyn, New York, is charged with the murder of John McGowan (66) at Ballyfin Demesne in Ballyfin, Portlaoise, Co Laois, on November 12th, 2024.
McGowan appeared before the Central Criminal Court on Monday and entered a plea of “Not guilty by reason of insanity” when asked by the registrar.
Judge Sean Gillane informed the jury panel that McGowan is a U.S. national and likely unknown to them. He also stated the case will involve issues related to mental health, which will be a central component of the trial.
The prosecution is being led by Brendan Grehan, with Michael Bowman and Olan Callanan representing the defense.
A jury of six men and six women has been sworn in to hear the trial, which is scheduled to begin on Tuesday before Judge Paul McDermott and is expected to last three days.
