Minister Kiren Rijiju announced on Monday that the Indian government is fully prepared to discuss every issue concerning student protests in Parliament, including police actions. This concession addresses a major Opposition demand for Home Minister Amit Shah to appear in Parliament and explain the use of pellet guns during demonstrations in Delhi and AK-47s in Bihar during protests over examination irregularities.
Parliamentary Debate Offered on Student Protests
The government’s willingness to debate the student movement comes with a strict condition regarding parliamentary decorum. According to Minister Kiren Rijiju, the administration welcomes a thorough examination of the protests, provided that opposition lawmakers do not disrupt the proceedings.
Detailing the official stance on Monday, Rijiju stated:
“The offer made by the government is very clear that it is ready to have a full and detailed discussion on students’ movement and activities related to it. My only point made to the Opposition, including Congress, is that while the discussion and a reply are being made, the Opposition should not create disturbances to prevent the statement of the Home Minister. They must listen to the reply of the Home Minister and the government,” Kiren Rijiju said.
Opposition Pressure and the Demand for Accountability
Most notably, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi recently published a scathing critique in The Hindu newspaper.
In his column titled “Either Culpable or Incompetent,” Gandhi targeted the Home Minister’s conspicuous silence and lack of administrative intervention following the violent police crackdowns on student demonstrators.
Highlighting the administration’s resistance to parliamentary scrutiny, Gandhi wrote:
“His (Amit Shah’s) inaction proves that he approves of the attack on students. He has not ordered any inquiry or even issued a statement. He has refused to come to Parliament, and motions filed daily by the Opposition asking for discussion have been summarily rejected,” Rahul Gandhi wrote in his column.
Balancing Legislative Scrutiny and House Proceedings
While the Opposition has consistently utilized daily motions to demand accountability for the security forces’ deployment of heavy crowd-control weaponry in Delhi and Bihar, the ruling administration insists that answers can only be delivered if lawmakers maintain order.
