/ Amnesty International revealed, on Wednesday, that members of the Iranian security forces had committed cases of rape and other forms of sexual violence against women and men who were arrested during the suppression of demonstrations that broke out throughout the country last year.

Protests erupted in Iran in September 2022 following the death of the young woman, Mahsa Amini, aged 22, after she was arrested by the morality police for not adhering to the strict dress code in the Islamic Republic.

The organization stated in a report published on its “official website” that it documented 45 cases of individual and group rape or sexual violence against demonstrators in more than half of the Iranian provinces.

The organization expressed concerns that these documented violations were part of a “broader pattern.”

In the report, the organization’s Secretary-General, Agnès Callamard, said, “Our research reveals how intelligence and security personnel in Iran use rape and other forms of sexual violence to torture and punish protesters – including children as young as 12 years old – and inflict long-term physical and psychological harm on them.” .

The organization, based in London, confirmed that the Iranian authorities were informed of its report on November 24, “but so far it has not received any response.”
