Investigation Status and Motive

Devon and Cornwall Police have confirmed there is no evidence of a political motive in the killing of former MP Ann Widdecombe. A 28-year-old white British man remains in custody following an arrest in Rotherham on Saturday, as investigators continue to process over 120 reports from the public. Authorities have stated they are not looking for anyone else in connection with her death.

Investigation Status and Motive

Authorities investigating the death of Ann Widdecombe, 78, have stated that there is nothing to suggest it was politically motivated. The former Conservative minister, and later Reform UK spokesperson, was found dead at her home in Haytor, Devon, on Thursday, having sustained serious injuries. Police believe the attack occurred almost 24 hours before her body was discovered.

Assistant Chief Constable Matt Longman confirmed on Sunday that there is no information to suggest the attack was terrorism-related. While investigators are maintaining an open-minded approach regarding the motive, they have emphasized that there is no perceived threat to the wider public. The family of the former minister has been informed of the updates and is being supported by specialist officers.

Arrest in Rotherham and Police Response

The investigation reached a significant turning point on Saturday night when officers from Counter Terrorism Police North East and South Yorkshire Police, acting on behalf of Devon and Cornwall Police, arrested a 28-year-old white British man in Rotherham, South Yorkshire. The arrest occurred shortly after 21:00 BST, approximately 270 miles (430km) from Widdecombe’s home in Devon.

Local residents in Rotherham witnessed a heavy police presence throughout Sunday as forensic teams examined a property believed to be connected to the investigation. At least two police vehicles were stationed outside the residence, which was cordoned off. Neighbor Raed Astle described the scene to the BBC: “I was making some food in the kitchen and looked out the window, there was loads of banging, and there was armed police in the pathway and they just went into the house and pulled him out.” Another neighbor, Claire Whybrow, stated: We’ve never seen so many police, adding, We didn’t know what was going off.

Public Appeals and Community Impact

Devon and Cornwall Police have received more than 120 reports of information from the public following a formal appeal. Assistant Chief Constable Longman has urged anyone who has not yet come forward to do so “as a priority.” He also reiterated calls asking people not to speculate, especially about a potential motive, noting that such commentary is “unhelpful” for the investigation and “distressing” to Widdecombe’s relatives.

Alison Hernandez, the police and crime commissioner for Devon, Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, stated that it has been a “very unsettling time” for the local community. Addressing the public’s tendency to speculate, she told reporters: “One of the lines that the police are always saying is ‘don’t speculate’ – my view is everyone is going to speculate, but just do it in the safety of your own home or down the pub.”

Political and Public Tributes

On Sunday, a group of around 40 mourners, including senior Reform figures, gathered in Haytor Vale to pay tribute to Widdecombe. Reform UK deputy leader Richard Tice confirmed to reporters that he had last spoken to her on Monday.

Chief Constable James Vaughan commended his force’s efforts, stating that Devon and Cornwall Police had “mounted an extraordinary response to a horrific murder of a very prominent public figure” and had shown British policing at its very best. He noted that the investigation had been running at “lightning pace” over the past 48 hours, adding: “I am really pleased that we have a suspect firmly in custody.” Authorities have confirmed that a “heightened” police presence will remain in the Haytor area over the coming weeks.
