Arlo Parks is redefining her sonic landscape. The two-time Grammy nominee’s forthcoming album, Ambiguous Desire, arriving April 3 via Transgressive, marks a bold step towards the dance floor, a space where vulnerability and euphoria collide. Leading the charge is the single “2SIDED,” a bass-driven exploration of yearning and the uncertainty of reciprocated affection.
The track, accompanied by a visually arresting video directed by Molly Burdett, initially presented a challenge for Parks. “It was a rough animal at first,” she explained in an exclusive conversation. “I wondered how to refine it without losing its raw energy. But it was crucial for it to feel slightly ominous, a feeling that then gives way to the exhilarating, sometimes heartbreaking, intensity of first love – that sense that the world is ending, but in a strangely beautiful way.”
Arlo Parks: A Sonic Evolution Towards Ambiguous Desire
Parks’ previous work hinted at electronic and dance influences, but Ambiguous Desire fully embraces them. This transformation is largely thanks to a creative partnership with Baird, a producer known for his work with Brockhampton and Kevin Abstract, who also collaborated with Parks on intimate preview shows in London, New York, and Los Angeles late last year. Three tracks – “Get Go,” “Nightswimming,” and “What if I Say It?” – benefit from the seasoned touch of longtime collaborator Paul Epworth.
The album’s creation was a deliberate process of sonic exploration. “So much of it was Baird and me in Ableton, embracing happy accidents and returning to the fundamentals,” Parks shared. “We were deeply influenced by pioneers of UK electronic music – Underworld, Massive Attack, and Burial – aiming for drum patterns between 100 and 120 BPM that felt both unique and nostalgic. It demanded patience, a slow, iterative approach, like building layers in an oil painting.”

Beyond the sonic shift, Ambiguous Desire delves into deeply personal themes. Parks continues to address sensitive subjects like sexuality, gender, and mental health, but now frames them within the context of a blossoming, shared life. “Being in the same household – sharing books, films, art, and individual pursuits – created space for play and inspiration,” she explained. “It’s a profoundly special experience, building a home with someone who understands its sacredness.”
The album promises a diverse sonic palette. “Blue Disco” is described as a head-nodding opener with nods to Goldie and Prince, while “Beams” is a soul-baring track propelled by breakbeats. The Sampha collaboration, “Senses,” stands out as a particularly intimate moment. “I listened to Sampha freestyle for hours, shaping poetry over the track. It was awe-inspiring,” Parks recalled. “We were watching an Afro-futurist film without sound, which created a deeply spiritual atmosphere.”
Ambiguous Desire follows Parks’ 2023 UK top 10 album, My Soft Machine, which featured a collaboration with Phoebe Bridgers on “Pegasus.” After a hiatus from touring since fall 2024, Parks is eager to bring the new material to life on stage. “I’m ready to reconnect with audiences,” she said. “I’ve been in my creative space for a while, and I’m excited to share this new energy.”
What role does vulnerability play in creating truly resonant art? And how can artists balance personal expression with the demands of a wider audience?
