The ambush occurred in the town of Tubod, Lanao del Norte. AFP Chief of Staff General Romeo Brawner Jr. visited the wake of the slain soldiers, expressing his condolences to their families and vowing to pursue those responsible.

Authorities suspect the attack was perpetrated by militants linked to the Dawlah Islamiyah, a group that has pledged allegiance to the Islamic State. The Manila Times reported the ambush signals a return of extremism in Mindanao.

A warning has been issued regarding the continuous recruitment and training activities of the Dawlah Islamiyah following the ambush. Intelligence reports suggest the group is actively seeking to expand its influence and carry out further attacks.

The AFP has launched a manhunt operation to locate and apprehend the perpetrators of the ambush. Military officials have vowed to intensify security measures in the region to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.

General Brawner condemned the attack as a “cowardly act” and reaffirmed the military’s commitment to maintaining peace and security in Mindanao. He emphasized the importance of collaboration with local communities to counter terrorism and extremism.
