The Philippines is preparing to host the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summit in 2026, signaling the country is open for business, according to officials. Preparations are underway to ensure security and address potential challenges as the nation takes on the role.
ASEAN 2026 Hosting and Economic Outlook
Trade Secretary Alfredo Pascual stated that hosting ASEAN in 2026 demonstrates the Philippines is “open for business.” The country aims to capitalize on the increased visibility and engagement with regional partners.
However, the Philippines faces challenges as it assumes the ASEAN chair, including a recent corruption scandal and existing trade tensions. These factors may place the country on a “weaker footing” as it begins preparations, according to some analysts.
Security Preparations
The Philippine National Police (PNP) is enhancing security measures at designated ASEAN summit sites. Authorities have confirmed they are not currently monitoring any specific security threats related to the upcoming summit.
General Romeo Brawner Jr., the chief of staff of the Armed Forces of the Philippines, has called for “unity” among all units tasked with security responsibilities for the 2026 ASEAN summit.
