Strengthening ASEAN-EU Economic Ties
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sihasak Phuangketkeow attended the 25th ASEAN-EU Ministerial Meeting in Brunei Darussalam from April 27 to 28. The discussions focused on enhancing cooperation in trade, investment, energy, and non-traditional security.
Key priorities included advancing negotiations for the ASEAN-EU Free Trade Agreement and supporting the transition to renewable energy. The meeting also addressed the need to combat transnational crime to ensure regional stability.
During the event, the Deputy Prime Minister held bilateral meetings with foreign ministers and senior representatives from the EU, the Philippines, Singapore, Vietnam, the Czech Republic, Latvia, Poland, and Cyprus. These talks aimed to expand cooperation in security and the digital economy.
Collaborative Efforts Against Transboundary Haze
From April 29 to 30, Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Suchart Chomklin visited the Lao PDR to address the ongoing crisis of transboundary haze. In meetings with Lao Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone, both nations committed to the “Clear Sky Strategy.”
The strategy focuses on a systematic reduction of hotspots and the prevention of forest fires. Additionally, the partnership will develop agricultural traceability and share technical knowledge to build long-term regional capacity.
Government Spokesperson Rachada Dhanadirek reported on May 2, 2026, that the administration, led by Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, remains committed to addressing the PM2.5 crisis through these regional partnerships.
The Thai government maintains that this proactive foreign policy is intended to create economic opportunities and improve the long-term quality of life and national sustainability for its citizens.
