The Election Commission has requested a panel of three officials from the West Bengal government to serve as returning officer in the Bhabanipur Assembly seat, following objections raised by the Trinamool Congress (TMC) regarding a previously appointed officer.

Bhabanipur Returning Officer Dispute

The dispute centers around Surajit Roy, the Block Development Officer (BDO) of Nandigram, who was initially appointed as the returning officer for Bhabanipur, the constituency of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. The TMC alleged Roy has close ties to BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari and could potentially influence the upcoming polls, where Adhikari is expected to challenge Banerjee.

Following the TMC’s complaint, the poll panel has asked Chief Secretary Dushmanta Narial to provide a list of three suitable officers for consideration.
