The Attica Region has finalized the installation of 388 traffic cameras designed to monitor and record red-light violations at selected road junctions across the Attica basin. According to regional officials, the project has been completed in accordance with the established schedule, marking a significant step in the region’s broader strategy to enhance road safety.
Attica Completes Installation of 388 Red-Light Enforcement Cameras
The initiative, which carries a total budget of 13.38 million euros plus VAT, was funded by the Recovery and Resilience Fund under the Road Safety Improvement Program. The locations for the camera installations were determined by the Attica Traffic Police Directorate, based on data and operational experience regarding intersections with high accident rates or increased risk associated with traffic signal violations.
Operational Parameters and Data Privacy
The newly installed system is designed to operate on a 24-hour basis, focusing exclusively on documenting red-light infractions. When a violation is detected, the system generates high-definition evidence consisting of six photographs and one video. This material is intended to be transmitted to the Hellenic Police to ensure that the verification of each violation is conducted with transparency and reliability.
To address privacy concerns, specific measures have been implemented to ensure that the identities of vehicle occupants are not discernible in the recorded footage. Regional authorities emphasized that the project is intended as a tool for prevention and public responsibility rather than a mechanism for revenue collection.
Path to Full Operational Status
While the physical installation of the equipment is complete, the system is not yet fully active. The Attica Region is currently coordinating with the Ministry of Digital Governance and the relevant departments of the Hellenic Police to finalize the integration of the camera network with the police’s digital traffic citation systems.
Regional Governor Nikos Hardalias stated that the region has fulfilled its obligations regarding the project’s deployment. The 388 cameras have been installed and are ready to serve as another valuable tool for strengthening road safety, Hardalias said. He further noted that the regional government is now awaiting the completion of the necessary administrative procedures by the state and the involved ministries to bring the system into full operational status.
Strategic Context of Road Safety
The installation of these cameras is part of a wider strategic plan by the Attica Region to improve road safety, which includes 31 separate projects with a total budget of 192.9 million euros. As of the latest reports, approximately 58% of these planned projects have either been completed, are currently in progress, or are in the tendering phase. The remaining projects are in the maturation stage, with plans to initiate tendering by the end of 2028.
Local authorities continue to highlight the dangers of red-light violations, characterizing them as some of the most hazardous and antisocial behaviors on the road. By deploying this technology, the region aims to reduce the frequency of traffic accidents and prevent potential fatalities, emphasizing that every day the system remains inactive represents a missed opportunity to improve safety on Attica’s roads.
