Australia Weather: Record March Rainfall & Monsoon Impacts

Australia is experiencing significant flooding across Queensland, the Northern Territory, and New South Wales, with some areas facing record rainfall and evacuations. The system threatens to deliver several months’ worth of rain in just 48 hours.

Widespread Flooding and Evacuations

Since the start of March, numerous rivers across Queensland and the Northern Territory have exceeded major flooding thresholds. Water levels are expected to recede in areas most affected by recent flooding, such as Katherine, though showers are forecast for the next couple of days.

Major record flooding is currently occurring west of the Daly River, prompting resident evacuations. Rivers across the east coast that experienced moderate to severe flooding are now beginning to subside, including the Burnett River, which neared 2010 flood levels in Bundaberg.

Katherine River Peaks

Katherine has endured its worst flooding in decades, with the river surpassing 17.5 meters on March 6 and peaking at 19 meters by the weekend – levels not seen since 2006. Eighty-five people remain in evacuation centers in Katherine, according to the latest government update.

As of Saturday morning, the Katherine River had fallen to 12.75 meters but remains closely monitored. Northern Territory Emergency Services and SecureNT are maintaining a high-level alert, urging residents across the region to remain alert and prepared.

Fatalities and Ongoing Searches

Parts of Queensland recorded their highest three-day rainfall totals on record between Sunday and Tuesday of last week, resulting in fatalities. Chinese tourists Qingwei Qui, 26, and Yuchen Guo, 23, were found dead inside their car near Kilkivan after failing to reach their destination on the North Burnett. Their vehicle had left the road and entered floodwater.

A search is underway for a man who vanished in floodwaters near Bundaberg after falling from his houseboat.
