A joint task force in Indonesia has dismantled dozens of illegal palm oil plantations in Southwest Aceh Regency amid concerns from farmers about deforestation and its impact on their livelihoods.

Illegal Palm Oil Plantations Cleared in Aceh

Forestry agencies and security forces collaborated to eliminate the illegal plantations, which were located in the Babahrot Subdistrict forest area, where palm oil cultivation is prohibited. According to Syukramizar, acting head of a forest management unit in Aceh, holders of management permits are prohibited from planting oil palms in social forestry areas.

The task force, comprised of forestry police, security officials, civil servant investigators, and members of the Indonesian National Military Forces and the national police, cleared 45.7 acres of illegal plantations. The area is now under increased surveillance to prevent further expansion of such operations.

Syukramizar stated that the enforcement proceeded smoothly and safely, noting the location is within a social forestry application area for three forest farmer groups currently seeking permits. Authorities have also urged the community to remove any illegally planted oil palm plantations independently.

Illegal palm oil schemes, while offering short-term gains, pose a threat to long-term economic health through deforestation, biodiversity loss, and soil nutrient depletion. Indonesia’s efforts align with global initiatives to combat illegal plantations, such as Brazil’s recent plans to increase fines for unlawful land clearing for crops, including palm oil, in the Amazon basin.

The move comes as companies explore more sustainable alternatives in industries like beauty and personal care, with firms like C16 Biosciences focusing on innovative solutions.
