Bali hotels are increasing security measures following a series of violent crimes, including three reported sexual assaults of foreign tourists in late March. Authorities have made arrests in connection with the assaults, but concerns remain regarding oversight of accommodation providers and overall visitor safety.
Bali Sexual Assault Cases
On March 23, a woman from China was allegedly raped in Labuansait, North Kuta, after getting onto the perpetrator’s motorcycle while returning from a nightclub. The 23-year-old suspect was arrested when he returned to the woman’s guesthouse to return her mobile phone, according to police.
The following day, March 24, an Australian woman was allegedly raped by a security staff member of a Seminyak nightclub while retrieving personal items. The 29-year-old suspect was arrested on March 26.
A third incident occurred in Canggu, North Kuta, involving a Chinese national on March 25. The woman, unable to find her hotel room key, was allegedly sexually assaulted by a man described in reports as either a front-desk employee or freelance security staff member of the hotel. The suspect is 24 years old.
Other Recent Crimes
In addition to the sexual assault cases, at least two foreigners have been killed in Bali in the last two months. On March 23, a Dutch man was fatally stabbed while returning to his villa in North Kuta with his Indonesian girlfriend. Police are working to identify the two attackers.
In February, Ukrainian tourist Igor Komarov was kidnapped and killed in the Jimbaran area. He was abducted on February 15 while riding scooters with friends, and his body was discovered on February 27, approximately 30 kilometers from the abduction site. Authorities have identified six suspects who remain at large.
Bali’s governor has stated that the island remains safe and tourism continues as normal, despite the recent incidents.
