The body believed to be that of a man missing since March 27 after a boat collision off the Southern Islands has been found in Indonesian waters. A 49-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the incident.
Search and Recovery
Singapore police were alerted by Indonesian authorities on March 30 at approximately 3 p.m. to the discovery of a body floating off the sea of Karimun, southwest of Singapore.
The deceased has been identified as 37-year-old Chua Muhammad Syafidi, an engineering supervisor with Tower Transit Singapore. He was one of three people aboard a pleasure craft that collided with a supply vessel around 4:15 a.m. on March 27.
Victim Profile
Mr. Syafidi had recently completed a part-time diploma in operations and engineering management and was scheduled to attend his graduation ceremony on May 5. He had been with Tower Transit for 10 years, progressing from a vehicle technician to an engineering supervisor.
Tower Transit described Mr. Syafidi as a “talented and creative engineer who loved to learn and grow.” He was known for building a life-size replica bus from scratch, which is now displayed at the Bulim Bus Depot.
“But he will be remembered most for the kindness he showed his colleagues, his readiness to lend a hand, and his ever-present smile. We will miss you, Syafidi,” Tower Transit said in a Facebook post.
Approximately 100 Tower Transit employees attended Mr. Syafidi’s funeral on April 5. The company has expressed its deepest condolences and support to his wife, children, and relatives.
Collision Details
The other two individuals on the pleasure craft were rescued on the day of the collision, according to the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA). All personnel on the supply vessel were accounted for, and no injuries were reported. The pleasure craft sank but was recovered on March 30.
Police investigations are ongoing.
