Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has announced an independent review into the Bondi Beach terror attack that left 15 people dead, including a 10-year-old child. The review will examine the performance of Australia’s federal law enforcement and intelligence agencies.
Bondi Beach Attack Review Announced
The review will be led by Dennis Richardson AC, and will assess whether agencies such as the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation (ASIO) and the Australian Federal Police operated effectively prior to the attack. Albanese stated his “heart breaks” for the families affected by the tragedy.
“Just over two weeks ago, antisemitic terrorists tried to tear our country apart, but our country is stronger than these cowards,” Albanese said. He added, “They went to Bondi Beach to unleash mass murder against our Jewish community. We need to respond with unity and urgency rather than division and delay.”
The review is expected to be completed and published in April. Richardson previously served as the head of ASIO, as well as the departments of defence and foreign affairs, and has led prior reviews into the intelligence community and sections of Home Affairs.
The announcement followed a meeting of the National Security Committee in Canberra. Albanese stated that Richardson will assess whether Commonwealth agencies performed to maximum effectiveness, considering what information they possessed about the alleged offenders before the attack and how information was shared between agencies.
The review will also evaluate the judgements made by agencies and whether any additional measures could have prevented the attack. Richardson will have full access to all relevant material, and departments and agencies will fully cooperate by providing documents, data, and access for meetings.
Albanese added that parliament will reconvene in 2026 to consider legislation “as soon as possible.”
The opposition has criticised the review, with Home Affairs spokesperson Jonathon Duniam calling it “a sad turn of events” and advocating for a full Commonwealth royal commission. “Anthony Albanese never misses an opportunity to miss an opportunity,” Duniam said.
