A bright meteor, also known as a bolide, was visible in the skies above Latvia on Wednesday evening, January 14th, according to weather reporter Toms Bricis.

Latvia Meteor Event

The meteor, commonly referred to as a “shooting star,” burned up in the Earth’s atmosphere around 9 p.m. Bolides are bright meteors typically caused by small pieces of rock or minerals entering the atmosphere from space.

The high speed of these objects creates friction with the atmosphere, causing them to heat up and ignite. While most “shooting stars” are about the size of a grain of sand, the bright flashes seen in this event were likely caused by an object the size of a small pebble.

These meteors burn up completely in the atmosphere and do not reach the ground. While small meteors are frequently observed on clear nights, bright bolides like the one seen in Latvia are a rarer occurrence, typically happening once or a few times per year.
