Brown University Shooting: Person of Interest in Custody

Kristy DosReis, chief information officer for public safety, confirmed a person of interest is in police custody following the shooting.

Providence Police Chief Oscar Perez told reporters the arrest occurred early Sunday. Details about the individual were not released as the investigation remains active.

Seven people injured at Brown University are in stable condition, according to Providence Mayor Brett Smiley. One person remains in critical but stable condition, and another has been discharged.

The shelter-in-place order for neighborhoods near the campus has been lifted, Smiley said, though some streets remain closed as investigators continue their work. Residents can expect a continued police presence throughout the city.

“The people of Providence should breathe a little easier this morning,” Smiley added.

Brown University announced Sunday that the shelter-in-place order for its campus in Rhode Island has also been lifted.

More than 400 law enforcement personnel were deployed Saturday after a suspect entered a building where students were taking exams with a firearm.

Access to parts of the campus remains restricted as police maintain a security perimeter around Minden Hall and nearby apartment buildings. The university has hundreds of buildings, including lecture halls, laboratories, and dorms.

Authorities had released a video of a suspect, described as a male possibly in his 30s dressed in black, who may have been wearing a mask. Investigators retrieved shell casings from the scene.

The gunman fled after shooting students in a classroom in Brown’s Barus & Holley engineering building, where outer doors were unlocked during the exams.

Brown President Christina Paxson stated that all or nearly all of the victims were students, adding, “This is the day one hopes never happens, and it has.”

Agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are assisting local and state police with the investigation.
