Buff Bagwell Reflects on Leg Amputation, Sobriety, and a Lost WCW Championship
Former WCW star Marcus “Buff” Bagwell is opening up about a period of profound transformation in his life, encompassing a life-altering leg amputation, a sustained journey to sobriety, and a renewed spiritual connection. In a candid conversation with Chris Van Vliet, Bagwell shared his story of resilience, regret, and ultimately, hope. The wrestling icon’s journey, marked by both hardship and healing, offers a powerful testament to the human spirit’s capacity for recovery.
A Blessing in Disguise: Finding Peace After Loss
Bagwell, remarkably, describes his current state as “blessed.” Five months after undergoing a leg amputation, a sentiment many would find difficult to express, he finds himself filled with gratitude. “It’s been crazy, this journey I’ve been on with this thing,” he shared. “But it all came at me at once – from the leg getting amputated, to my sobriety, to my relationship with Jesus Christ, to my relationship with Stacy.” He also expressed deep joy in his family life, cherishing his role as a grandfather to twelve children.
From Darkness to Light: A Transformed Individual
Bagwell acknowledges a significant shift in his personal character. He believes a darker version of himself emerged through years of substance abuse. “I’m a completely different person,” he stated. “I believe I was always a pretty good guy…but through drinking and pills, drinking and drugging, I lost that Marcus.” He attributes his recovery to the cessation of those habits, allowing his true self to resurface. “When the drinking and drugging stopped, Marcus instantly started, slowly coming back, and now Marcus is fully back.” He describes a renewed sense of inner peace and positivity, noting that his presence now “lights up” a room, both externally and internally.
The Roots of Addiction: A Neck Injury and Prescription Pain
The seeds of Bagwell’s addiction were sown in 1998 following a severe neck injury. Initially prescribed pain medication, he admits the situation quickly spiraled out of control. “It started legitimately with, ‘Hey, man, I’m hurt. My neck is hurting, and I would take a pain pill,’ and it just climbed crazily from there.” This initial reliance on prescription medication ultimately led to a decades-long battle with both pills and alcohol.
A Long Road to Recovery: Multiple Rehab Attempts
Bagwell’s path to sobriety was not linear. He recounted multiple attempts at rehabilitation, beginning in the early 2000s after his time with WWE. “I went to rehab for five days…they told me it was a medical detox…Day eight, I was right back, taking pills again and drinking again.” He continued to seek help, undergoing five or six rehab stints, with a period in 2012 offering a glimmer of hope, though not complete sobriety. The turning point, he says, came after a car accident in 2020. Unable to “fix” his physical pain, he resolved to “fix” himself, leading to a commitment to sobriety that has now lasted three years and five months, with August 27, 2022, marking his sobriety birthday.
The Car Accident and the Difficult Decision
The 2020 car accident, occurring while under the influence, resulted in a devastating injury to his right knee. After 41 surgeries attempting to repair the damage, and repeated infections, Bagwell faced a grim reality. When doctors suggested amputation, he initially resisted, hoping for one last chance at repair. However, after learning that a potential skin graft procedure had only a 20% chance of success, he made the difficult decision to proceed with the amputation. He recounted the moment of clarity: “Let’s cut it off.”
What Could Have Been: A Lost Opportunity in WCW?
Bagwell also reflected on his career in WCW, expressing a firm belief that he would have become World Champion had the company not been sold to WWE. He credits Missy Hyatt with preparing him for the political realities of professional wrestling, warning him that his looks and youth would make him a target. “She showed me and taught me that you’re going to have to work 10 times harder…If you don’t walk in every single time and shake hands and thank everybody and work hard, you’re going to get buried.” He recalls building relationships with fellow wrestlers like Sting, despite initial animosity from some, and acknowledges a falling out with the Steiner Brothers over a video he created.
What are your thoughts on Bagwell’s incredible journey? Do you believe the wrestling landscape would have been different had WCW remained a competitor to WWE?
