Passengers Unharmed During AirAsia Flight AK720 Incident

A passenger, identified as Mr. Tan, was on AirAsia flight AK720 from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur on April 4 when the incident occurred. The aircraft had just touched down at approximately 10:10 p.m. when a section of the cabin ceiling fell.

Mr. Tan described the landing as normal, but reported hearing a sound and seeing a panel fall from the ceiling in front of him as the plane touched down. He noted the sound of the falling panel was not very noticeable due to the noise of the landing.

The panel, which covered the cabin lighting fixtures, was relatively large, with part of it landing on the seats and another section remaining suspended. Passengers reacted with shock and disbelief, with some laughing at the situation, according to Mr. Tan.

The crew responded by reminding passengers to remain seated and keep their seatbelts fastened. No one was seated directly below where the panel fell, and it did not obstruct the aisle. Passengers disembarked safely after the aircraft taxied normally.

Mr. Tan expressed concern about aviation safety, emphasizing the importance of regular checks, stating that the incident could have been serious if someone, particularly a child, had been hit by the falling panel.

Dato’ Captain Fareh Mazputra, General Manager of AirAsia Malaysia, confirmed the safe landing of flight AK720 and reported no injuries to passengers or crew. The incident involved a cabin panel becoming loose during landing.

AirAsia stated that the aircraft had undergone all required maintenance checks, including routine 36-hour inspections, and a satisfactory preflight inspection was completed before departure. Cabin crew promptly attended to passengers seated near the affected area and relocated them comfortably.

The aircraft was immediately inspected by the engineering team, and the panel was refitted and secured according to safety standards. AirAsia apologized for any inconvenience and reaffirmed that safety remains their top priority.
