California Pollution Cap: Savings & Economic Boost

California regulators are urged to adopt a more ambitious cap on pollution, a move advocates say will lower costs for families and deliver significant economic and climate benefits. The Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) is calling for swift action from the Board to pursue tighter pollution limits through 2030.

Stronger Emissions Cap Could Yield Savings

Modeling from Greenline Insights indicates a stronger emissions cap could remove 586 million more tons of climate-altering pollution between 2027 and 2045. This tighter cap is projected to generate $600 million in savings for families earning $100,000 or less, and $2.2 billion in savings for those earning less than $70,000.

“The conclusion of this process is more important than how it starts. We are pleased to see the Board resume its rule-making and urge them to take swift, bold action,” said Katelyn Roedner Sutter, California Senior Director at the Environmental Defense Fund.

EDF argues that an ambitious approach is crucial to prevent a climate-induced affordability crisis driven by increasingly frequent and destructive disasters. The organization stated it looks forward to collaborating with the Board to establish a more ambitious pollution cap.
