Protests Erupt in Caracas Following the Killing of Mariposa
Protesters gathered in a sit-in on Urdaneta Avenue, positioned between La Candelaria square and the headquarters of the Public Ministry, to demand accountability for the animal’s death.
Demonstrators subsequently marched to the residential neighborhood of Lídice to confront the man identified by neighbors as the attacker. The protest caused significant disruptions to vehicular traffic in the area, as documented by images published by journalist Robert Lobo on social media. Participants carried signs featuring photographs of Mariposa and chanted slogans demanding an end to impunity regarding animal cruelty cases.
From Earthquake Survivor in La Guaira to Tragedy in Lídice
Mariposa’s story initially captured national attention as a symbol of hope following the earthquakes in La Guaira. Rescuers pulled the frightened, injured, and thirsty animal alive from the ruins of a collapsed building in Playa Grande. Her miraculous survival and struggle to emerge from the debris became widely viral across digital platforms.
After her rescue, a temporary family brought Mariposa to Caracas to begin a new life far from her original family, who had disappeared following the terremotos del 24 de julio. However, tragedy struck shortly after she was placed under shelter when she slipped away from the house for a few minutes.
Public Outrage and Demands for Accountability From Public Figures
The incident generated widespread public anger, amplifying calls for institutional action against animal abuse. Actress and singer Liliana Morillo Rodríguez used her official Instagram account to urge Venezuelan authorities to take swift action, identifying the suspect by the nickname Raulín
and noting that he and his family are currently fugitives from justice.

The audio clip shared on social media also featured the voice of Lilibeth Morillo, who joined her sister in demanding accountability. Meanwhile, local residents near the suspect’s residence in Lídice reported that the man fled the neighborhood immediately following the incident and has not been seen in the area since, leaving activists waiting for the Public Ministry to execute formal arrests.
