Chadwick Boseman’s Family Files Petition to Remove Widow as Estate Administrator

The family of the late Black Panther actor Chadwick Boseman has filed a court petition to remove his widow, Taylor Simone Ledward, as administrator of his estate. The actor’s brothers, Derrick and Kevin Boseman, allege that Ledward has failed to distribute assets and lacks the necessary transparency to manage the legacy.

Nearly six years after Chadwick Boseman’s death in August 2020, a fresh legal dispute has emerged over the actor’s estate. In a petition filed in a Los Angeles court on July 17, Boseman’s brothers, Derrick and Kevin Boseman, requested the removal of Taylor Simone Ledward as the estate’s administrator. Representing the interests of their parents, Leroy and Carolyn Boseman, the brothers contend that the estate, which is valued at more than $3.8 million (£2.85 million), remains only partially settled despite a 2022 court order for its distribution.

Allegations of Mismanagement and Lack of Transparency

The legal filing centers on claims that the probate process has stalled and that Ledward has maintained excessive control over the actor’s financial affairs. According to the petition, Ledward was previously granted a 50% share of the estate, with the remaining half divided equally between Boseman’s parents. The brothers argue that these obligations have not been met, leaving the family without closure or the financial support intended by the court’s earlier rulings.

Derrick and Kevin Boseman stated via ABC News/IBTimes that nearly four years later, the respondent has still not distributed the estate, nor has she filed a petition for discharge with receipts as required, and instead, the respondent continues to exert unilateral control over the decedent’s estate, denying the decedent’s family long overdue closure or participation in decision-making regarding matters affecting Leroy and Carolyn’s interests in the decedent’s estate.

The petition further alleges that Ledward has created a lack of transparency regarding the operations of a company established to manage the actor’s image and intellectual property rights. The family claims that assets including bank accounts, an IRA, and various SAG-AFTRA residual payments remain unresolved. Furthermore, the filing asserts that a long-term care insurance policy intended for Carolyn Boseman has not been distributed, and that the widow has blocked the family from pursuing business opportunities related to the actor’s legacy.

Proposed Appointment of Jason Rubin

In a public statement released on July 23, the brothers emphasized that their legal challenge is not an attempt to diminish the late actor’s legacy, but rather to protect it. They expressed that the ongoing nature of the proceedings has caused significant emotional distress for their parents.

Derrick and Kevin Boseman remarked via BBC News that one should imagine flipping through the channels and stumbling on a film starring their deceased son or brother, knowing that someone they do not know or trust is profiting from his image without their input or consent.

Background of the Estate and Legacy

Chadwick Boseman died at the age of 43 following a private four-year battle with colon cancer. Because he died without a will, California intestacy laws have governed the division of his assets. Since his passing, his family has navigated multiple tributes, including the release of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, which the cast and crew crafted while invoking the spirit of Chadwick daily, according to actress Lupita Nyong’o.

While the legal battle over the estate continues, the family remains focused on the court’s next steps. Ledward, an R&B artist, has not yet publicly responded to the latest filing, and a decision on whether to remove her as administrator rests with the Los Angeles court. The brothers maintain that their commitment is to ensure that transparency, accountability, and respect guide the resolution of the matter, honoring a career that saw Boseman rise to global fame through roles in 42, Marshall, and the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
