Changes to Traffic Planned Near the Old Gertrude Church in Central Riga, but Not Everyone Supports the Idea

Riga officials are planning significant traffic changes near the Old Gertrude Church in the city center to expand pedestrian zones and update surrounding infrastructure.

  • Project Budget: 900,000 euros.
  • Key Change: The area symmetrically opposite the church entrance will become a pedestrian zone.
  • Timeline: Construction schedules will be determined after procurement ends in early May.

Planned Traffic Reorganization

The project involves updating the surface of Gertrudes Street from Brivibas Street to Skolas Street. While vehicle traffic will be maintained in certain areas, the square directly in front of the Old Gertrude Church entrance will be closed to cars.

Under the new plan, entry into the roundabout will be restricted, allowing access only from Baznicas and Skolas Streets. Residents and entrepreneurs located between Brivibas Street and the closed zone will retain access to all gates.

Marta Kotello, chair of the Riga City Council’s Transport and Communications Committee, stated that vehicles entering from Brivibas Street will still be able to drop off passengers or enter yards to turn around and exit back onto Brivibas Street.

Divided Perspectives on Development

The proposal has sparked a public debate among city officials and local business owners. Landscape architect Helena Gutmane supports the move, arguing that removing cars from the square improves the urban environment and will likely increase business turnover.

However, some entrepreneurs have expressed concern regarding the construction process. Specifically, those with summer terraces fear that excavations, dust, and blocked traffic will negatively impact their operations during the peak season.

While Kotello maintains that increased pedestrian traffic will benefit local businesses, her deputy, Ansis Pupols, has called for the project to be halted. Pupols cited concerns from entrepreneurs regarding restricted access and a potential drop in customer numbers.

Project Timeline and Funding

The total budget for the reconstruction is set at 900,000 euros. The city is currently awaiting the completion of the procurement process, which is expected in early May, before a final construction schedule is released.
