Charles Leclerc set the pace in the opening practice session for the 2026 Hungarian Grand Prix, recording a fastest lap time of 1:19.075 at the Hungaroring. The Ferrari driver’s performance comes as the team aims to capitalize on the technical, twisty layout of the Budapest circuit, which many expect to suit their car’s characteristics.
Leclerc’s session was not without incident, however. The Monegasque driver was forced to limp back to the pits with seven minutes remaining due to a suspected gearbox issue.
Competitive Start to the Weekend
The session was interrupted with 25 minutes remaining when a red flag was deployed. Lance Stroll’s Aston Martin suffered a rear-left suspension failure on the exit of Turn 2, resulting in a violent spin. While Stroll was unhurt, the incident hampered the team’s progress during a weekend where they introduced 16 upgrades to their car.
Technical Scrutiny and Stewarding
Beyond the mechanical challenges, the stewards noted both Max Verstappen and former teammate Carlos Sainz for driving erratically during the session. Officials confirmed that Verstappen will be investigated for an incident involving the driver.
The Hungaroring, a 4.381km circuit, remains one of the most technical tracks on the calendar. With its narrow layout and limited overtaking opportunities, the circuit places a premium on track position and qualifying. As the weekend progresses, heat management and tire degradation are expected to be critical factors, with temperatures projected to reach highs of 32°C (90°F) and track temperatures nearing 50°C.
Context of the 2026 Season
This weekend marks the 41st running of the Hungarian Grand Prix as a world championship event, arriving 40 years after the country first joined the Formula 1 calendar in 1986. The event serves as the final stop before the sport’s summer break.
