A man underwent emergency surgery after his stomach ruptured from consuming liquid nitrogen. The incident occurred after the man ingested the substance, which rapidly expanded inside his body, creating extreme internal pressure.
Liquid Nitrogen Consumption Leads to Stomach Rupture
The man, identified as Sergey, was initially seen clasping his stomach in pain before collapsing. Medics at the venue attempted to treat him before he was rushed to the hospital.
Doctors confirmed that Sergey experienced a rapid expansion of gas as the liquid nitrogen vaporized. This created extreme internal pressure that ultimately ruptured his stomach.
Liquid nitrogen boils intensely at room temperature, expanding hundreds of times in volume, making it extremely dangerous if swallowed. The sudden expansion can tear the stomach lining, cause internal bleeding, and freeze surrounding tissues.
Several reported deaths have been linked to the consumption of liquid nitrogen, and its use in food and drinks is strongly discouraged and heavily regulated in numerous countries.
Sergey was conscious and recovering following surgery, though his condition remains serious.
