The Chinese Embassy in Singapore has issued a warning to its citizens, urging them to avoid gambling activities following a recent death linked to gambling at Marina Bay Sands Casino. The embassy reiterated that gambling is illegal under Chinese law, even when conducted in countries where it is permitted.

Gambling Warning Issued After Recent Death

The notice, released Saturday via the embassy’s official WeChat account, came after a Chinese national died after allegedly gambling at Marina Bay Sands and subsequently jumping from a building. The embassy is currently assisting the family with arrangements following the incident.

According to the embassy, several previous cases involving deaths connected to gambling have prompted prior warnings to Chinese citizens. With the Chinese New Year holiday approaching and an anticipated increase in travel to Singapore, the embassy emphasized the importance of understanding and adhering to legal regulations.

Chinese law strictly prohibits gambling, and a recent amendment to the Criminal Law explicitly criminalizes participation in cross-border gambling. Even if gambling occurs in a jurisdiction where it is legal, Chinese citizens may still face legal repercussions in China.

The embassy cautioned that gambling can lead to significant personal and financial hardship, including financial ruin, family disruption, and loss of life. It also warned of potential exposure to risks such as fraud, money laundering, kidnapping, detention, human trafficking, and illegal migration.

The Chinese Ministry of Public Security has established a platform for reporting cross-border gambling activities. Citizens are encouraged to report information regarding Chinese nationals suspected of operating casinos abroad, organizing gambling, or engaging in online cross-border gambling.
