West Java Landslide Recovery Efforts Continue
As of 6:30 p.m. local time on Monday, Jan. 26, the joint search and rescue team had evacuated 38 body bags, which were then sent to Disaster Victim Identification (DVI) specialists. Currently, 18 bodies remain unidentified.
Authorities resumed search operations across two sectors at 8 a.m. Tuesday, expanding the search radius and deploying nine excavators to accelerate debris removal. Around 800 personnel from various state institutions, including emergency responders, police, and military units, are involved in the response.
The disaster has displaced 685 residents, who are currently sheltering in Pasirlagu Village. 353 people are staying at the village sports center, while others have taken refuge in a nearby communal hall.
The BNPB is providing relief supplies, including food packages, ready meals, folding beds, blankets, mattresses, and hygiene kits, to evacuees. The agency will continue search and rescue operations and distribute essential assistance until conditions are declared safe, while also monitoring weather and terrain to mitigate further landslide risks.
Recent reports indicate the landslide was triggered by a collapsed natural dam and linked to ancient geology and saturated groundwater.
