Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi will return to Karachi on Thursday to express condolences to the family of a Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) activist who died following a rally led by the chief minister.
Condolences for PTI Activist
The visit comes after Bilal Mahsood tragically fell from his motorcycle during the rally while it was passing over the Lyari Expressway. He was hospitalized and treated for a day before succumbing to his injuries.
Afridi is scheduled to visit Mahsood’s residence in UC-1 Seven Star Town, Ganna Mandi area of Sohrab Goth, and then depart for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Allegations of Unrest During Previous Visit
The upcoming visit follows accusations from Sindh’s senior minister, Sharjeel Memon, that PTI attempted to recreate the events of May 9 during Afridi’s previous visit to Karachi. Memon claimed PTI supporters engaged in vandalism, assaulted journalists, and pelted police with stones, resulting in injuries to several officers.
Memon stated that despite offering logistical support and manpower for the rally, PTI allegedly violated agreed-upon arrangements and used unauthorized routes.
A security threat was received prior to Afridi’s arrival, but the Sindh government chose not to publicize it to avoid panic, instead informing the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government and advising against visiting sensitive areas. According to Memon, Afridi proceeded to District South despite the briefing.
Memon further alleged that the KP chief minister’s delegation failed to follow designated routes in Hyderabad, causing significant traffic congestion. He claimed Afridi then accused the Sindh government of deliberately causing traffic delays.
Regarding a planned rally, Memon clarified that Bagh-e-Jinnah and the surrounding area of the Quaid-e-Azam Mausoleum are managed by a trust, and PTI’s decision to not hold the rally within the grounds raised questions about their motives.
