CNRS Researchers Map the Neural Pathways of Childhood Olfactory Memory
Researchers at the CNRS have identified how childhood olfactory experiences create lasting neural pathways, explaining the phenomenon known as the madeleine de Proust.
Published July 14, 2026, in the journal PLOS Biology, the study reveals that specific neurons in the olfactory bulb link early-life scents to emotional memory and reward circuits in the adult brain. This research provides a scientific foundation for a concept that has remained mysterious for over a century.
For over a century, the term madeleine de Proust
has served as a literary shorthand for the way a sensory input, such as an odor or a taste, can instantly transport an individual back to their childhood. While the expression originates from the work of writer Marcel Proust, who famously described how the taste of a madeleine cake dipped in tea triggered memories of his youth in Du côté de chez Swann, the biological mechanism behind this emotional time travel remained largely unexamined. Recent research from the Centre de recherche en neurosciences de Lyon (CNRS) provides the first concrete neurological explanation for why these memories are so vivid, instantaneous, and resistant to the passage of time.
Neural Mechanisms in the Olfactory Bulb
The study identifies the olfactory bulb as the central actor in this process. As a region of the brain dedicated to the processing of odors, the olfactory bulb possesses a unique characteristic: it continues to develop throughout childhood. According to the authors, odors encountered during these formative years leave a durable trace in specific neurons. When these identical odors are perceived at adulthood, they reactivate these specific neurons, which in turn solicit the circuits of the brain dedicated to memory and pleasure.
This dual activation is what gives the madeleine de Proust
its characteristic emotional weight. When the memory is triggered, it is not merely a recall of a fact, but a re-experiencing of the affect associated with the initial event. The study indicates that these memories become increasingly vivacious and charged with emotion because the brain’s networks reorganize over time, causing olfactory-linked memories to anchor themselves more deeply within emotional circuits.
Experimental Methodology Using 272 Mice and Enriched Environments

To reach these conclusions, the scientists combined data collected from human volunteers—specifically through a questionnaire regarding olfactory memories—with controlled experiments on 272 mice. The experimental methodology involved exposing young mice to specific attractive odors, such as citrus, flower, or camphor, between the 23rd and 33rd day of their lives—a period equivalent to childhood.
The researchers placed these mice in a “giant cage” transformed into a playground, featuring wheels, tunnels, ladders, hiding spots, and cereal to snack on. A control group was exposed to the same odors but kept in an ordinary cage without the stimulating, playful environment. Once the mice reached adulthood, they were presented with the same scent in a neutral context to observe if the memory persisted. The findings showed that the experiences associated with the scent in a positive, enriched environment left a particularly stable trace in the brain.

Because the brain undergoes continuous development and reorganization, the links between sensory input and emotional response evolve. By identifying these specific neural pathways, the CNRS team has demonstrated that certain odors function as genuine biological markers of an individual’s personal history, effectively bridging the gap between early childhood development and adult emotional processing.
