A polar vortex is bringing extremely cold temperatures to much of Canada, with warnings in effect for several provinces. Wind chill values are expected to approach minus 49 degrees Celsius in some areas, posing risks to those exposed to the elements.
Extreme Cold Sweeps Across Canada
Environment Canada has issued extreme cold warnings and snowfall warnings for various regions, stretching from Alberta to the Atlantic provinces. The frigid arctic air is impacting a large portion of the country, prompting officials to urge caution and prepare for hazardous conditions.
In Toronto, city staff are advising shelters and warming centres not to turn anyone away as temperatures plummet. Officials emphasize the potential for life-threatening conditions in such extreme cold, stating, “People can die in weather like this.”
Steinbach, Manitoba, is currently under an extreme cold warning, with wind chills near minus 49 degrees Celsius. Similar conditions are expected in other parts of the Prairies and Ontario.
The polar vortex is a large area of low pressure and cold air surrounding both of the Earth’s poles. It typically remains contained in the Arctic, but can sometimes dip south, bringing frigid temperatures to North America.
Residents are advised to dress in layers, cover exposed skin, and limit time outdoors. Checking on vulnerable individuals is also recommended during this period of extreme cold.
