The Philippine Congress has allocated ₱1.38 trillion to the education sector for the upcoming year, as concerns grow over the reading and math proficiency of Filipino students. This increased budget aims to address deficiencies highlighted by recent studies showing a significant number of students lacking basic skills.
Addressing Reading Proficiency Concerns
Senator Win Gatchalian emphasized the need to address poor reading proficiency among students, particularly in the early grades. A recent study revealed that seven in ten students in the Philippines lack basic reading skills, while Grade 5 students are trailing their counterparts in Southeast Asia in reading and math.
Gatchalian supports a larger 2026 budget for education to tackle these issues. He noted the urgent need for interventions to improve learning outcomes, especially after disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Recent Study Findings
A new study indicates a widespread lack of foundational reading skills among Filipino students. Grade 5 students in the Philippines are performing below the average of their peers in Southeast Asia in both reading and mathematics, according to data released recently. The study underscores the need for focused educational programs and resource allocation.
The allocated ₱1.38 trillion budget is intended to support various educational programs and initiatives aimed at improving the quality of education and addressing the learning gaps identified in recent assessments.
