Indonesia’s tourism sector is heavily reliant on strong connectivity between islands and countries, according to a Ministry of Tourism official, as the country experiences growth in both domestic and foreign tourist arrivals.

Indonesia Tourism Growth Fueled by Connectivity

Deputy for Marketing at the Ministry of Tourism, Ni Made Ayu Marthini, emphasized that connectivity is a crucial pillar for tourism growth, alongside attractions and accommodation. She explained that improved connectivity facilitates public mobility and boosts economic growth within the sector.

Marthini encouraged strategic collaboration among stakeholders – including the government, transportation industry, and related businesses – to strengthen Indonesia’s tourism network. “If connectivity between countries or between islands is weak, it is impossible for us to achieve our tourism goals,” she said.

Statistics Indonesia (BPS) reported 96.45 million domestic tourist trips in November 2025, a 0.47 percent increase from the previous month. Domestic tourism also rose 19.64 percent compared to November 2024.

From January to November 2025, Indonesia welcomed 13.98 million foreign tourists, a 10.44 percent increase from the 12.66 million visits recorded during the same period in 2024. The majority of foreign visitors originated from Malaysia, Australia, Singapore, China, and Timor Leste.

Tourists contribute significantly to the economy, directly supporting businesses in the food and beverage, hospitality, and transportation sectors.
